Baby Boy

Flip flop mom wrote of her baby's check up. Reminded me that my boy had one too . . .

He got his 18 month old visit. He's about 28 lbs, and 30 some inches tall.

He's in the 75% of his growth chart . . . that's good. And they almost ordered ANOTHER blood draw to check for lead poisoning when I reminded them that he got one at his 12 month old check up! *WHEW* Those are horrible things . . . NO WAY do I volunteer for a second round . . .

OK, but I'm rambling here . . .

Flip was saying that her 15mo isn't talking . . .and with a bunch of ear wax that may be a "thing".

I was reminded when we first started going to this pediatrician. She is wonderful, has a gentle way with kids and I can get them in at almost a moments notice . . . I won't change that convenience for the world . . . but one thing . . .she discourages mothers (including me) from teaching their babies to sign.

Hold on a minute while I collect myself from the floor from laughing . . .

When I told her that I was teaching my boy sign . . . and she told me not to, 'cause it might delay his speech, I nodded politely and did a class A job of keeping a "Oh, is that so" look on my face instead of a "Do-you-not-know-what-I-do-for-a-living?" and then me and my hubby had a good giggle in the car.

You see . . . last minute availability trumps baby rearing propaganda . . . I'll hold my tongue!

But as for my boy . . . he signs words in both American Sign Language, Mexican sign language and "talks" enough to please any pediatrician. He kind of blows the whole . . "older sibling does all the talking for him so he won't talk until later" theory too . . . and not that she doesn't sure do enough talking for everyone!!!

I'm not sure if you read all my comments on that post, but a few of them said that they took their children to speech theropy and the first thing the theropist told them to do was to start signing!! That's funny that your doc told you the opposite! From the comments I got, they said to teach her to sign(and say the word at the same time.) so that she knows that she has to communicate, and not just point, and then eventually she'll start saying the words with it. I guess diff docs are diff. People are telling me to stick to my mother's intuition, but honestly, my mother's intuition is nervous that she's not putting on weight. i'm not really worried about the talking, because 1. I know she can hear and 2. she's developmentally where a 15 month old should be in everything else. But the weight I am concered about. It seems that she just can't keep it on. I don't know, we'll see how she does at her next weight check.

When I taught Spanish 1, I found that using signs/gestures REALLY helped my students remember vocabulary words.

I've been learning sign via the Signing Time and Talking Hands Videos with Baby Bear, and both of us love it. If anything, it has helped us communicate. (And impresses the grandparents!!!!)

Cute boy!!

I have found that the speech thing is true for a minority of kids, doing daycare. I did have one girl who was three and would NOT speak to me, only signed all day long, but chattered like a magpie to her family at night. Don't know what was up with that.

In general though, I think it would be best to give your kids all the avenues of communication that you can.

Yay! Good for him and good for you, I would have had a hard time not telling the doc what I did for a living after that...ha ha ha!
Sometimes I think these docs just have personal ideas behind what they tell you to do and not do, and no research to back it up...
